TOE related the disparate east and west ends of a derelict and sinking train tunnel in Richmond Virginia to the social and economic materiality of urban renewal of the former confederate capitol.
Referring to the Church Hill Tunnel as a tunnel is something of a misuse of the word. In 1925 it collapsed and as it sits now it is a mass of wet ground joining a derelict ravine and a swimming pool. The area is a known for being unstable, haunted, and hosts old homes and is a club district. TOE is a contact sculpture as a counterpoint to Richmond.
